Broad Street United Methodist Church project selected as a finalist for the 2008 James B. Recchie Design and Preservation Award

The James B. Recchie Design and Preservation Award is given annually by the Columbus Landmarks Foundation to honor a development project for its “ responsiveness to human needs; creativity of design; sensitivity to surrounding area; quality of materials, craftsmanship, use of space, sense of scale; and emotional impact.” This year, RKA’s exterior renovation of Broad Street United Methodist Church has been selected as a finalist among five local projects exhibiting “an exceptional level of quality and workmanship.” The winner will be identified at a reception to be held Thursday November 6 at Broad Street Presbyterian Church, where RKA recently completed another renovation and addition project.

Broad Street United Methodist Church, designed by renowned Columbus architect Joseph Warren Yost, was built in 1885. Rogers Krajnak Architects’ 2008 renovation included the painstaking removal and replacement of the building’s deteriorating stone veneer; the cleaning and repairing of its sandstone and limestone sills, lintels, columns, and watertable; the painting of wood windows and pressed metal trim; and repair and replacement of detail elements lost over the years due to weather and neglect.

2008 AIA Columbus Chapter Canstruction, "Best Use of Labels"

The staff of Rogers Krajnak Architects, Inc. and their CanStruction partners from Ruscilli Construction got together to participate in the 2008 Canstruction event. In response to this year’s theme, “One can make a difference,” Rogers Krajnak Architects constructed one giant can made of 1760 cans. The can labels were oriented to form the giant can’s label, which was an image of a knife, fork, spoon and slice of bread: the logo of Mid-Ohio Food Bank. Team Rogers Krajnak Architects and Ruscilli salutes the Mid-Ohio Food Bank, which embodies the concept of harnessing the power of individual donors and volunteers to make a difference in the lives of so many central Ohioans suffering from hunger.

Rogers Krajnak Architects team’s entry was recognized for “Best Use of Labels.” All of the food used in the structures was donated to Operation Feed, via the Mid-Ohio Food Bank.

Rogers Krajnak Architects, Inc. receives the 2006 AIA / CES Award of Excellence

Rogers Krajnak Architects is a winner of the 2006 American Institute of Architects Continuing Education Award for Excellence. The national award recognizes educational providers to architectural and engineering firms and their commitment to an overall system of developing high quality professional continuing education programs. Rogers Krajnak Architects has earned an Honorable Mention in the Small Firm category, firms with fewer than 100 employees.

Darryl G. Rogers, AIA and Peter Krajnak, AIA formed Rogers Krajnak Architects in 2001 with a focus on creating life long learning opportunities for every staff member. “We became an AIA/CES registered provider and established the RKA Mentoring Program,” said Krajnak. “Each registered architect is teamed with other staff members to research, prepare and present eighteen to twenty annual presentations. We believe that the RKA Mentoring Program has consistently improved our professional development, sharpened our presentation skills, reinforced our firm’s values and promoted our staffs’ quest for continuing education in a real and meaningful manner.”

“I firmly believe that choosing a career as an architect means that you have accepted a lifelong pursuit of knowledge and education,” said Rogers. “I also feel it is the experienced architect’s role to mentor students and interns. At Rogers Krajnak Architects, we find that the experienced architects learn as much from younger staff as the younger staff learn from them. Our in-house continuing education/mentoring program directly relates to these philosophies and provides invaluable staff interaction”.

The jury indicated that the strengths of the RKA Mentoring Program include strong senior management involvement in creating and sustaining a mentoring program that is designed to engage all staff members. The jury commented, “involving the entire staff in the design and presentations of CES materials achieves multiple goals and the design process of the CES program becomes a learning process in itself which reinforces the actual presentation and learning of the content.”

In addition to Rogers Krajnak Architects, other 2006 winners include Cannon Design, from Grand Island, New York in the Large Firm Category and AIA Northern Virginia, Alexandria, Virginia in the AIA Component Category. Winners will accept a trophy at the AIA/CES MarketPlace at the 2006 National Convention next June in Los Angeles, CA.

Rogers Krajnak Architects, Inc. receives AIA Merit Award for the renovation of Trinity Episcopal Church

In December 2004, Rogers Krajnak Architects, Inc. received a Merit Award from the Columbus Chapter of the American Institute of Architects for the renovation of Trinity Episcopal Church in Toledo, Ohio. The project was selected from 38 entries in the 2004 Honors Awards Program. The jury commented on the successful integration of new interior elements and exterior additions to this Civil War era church.

The project is a combination of restoration, renovation and new construction. The nave, chancel, gallery, gathering area and entry vestibule were extensively renovated to incorporate new lighting, sound and mechanical systems as well as new wood flooring, painted wall decoration and painted ceiling decoration.

The baptismal font and the altar are wonderful combinations of old and new. The 1876 marble infant font and the new hexagonal immersion pool are integrated together to provide for the baptism of infants and adults. The freestanding marble, limestone and mosaic tile altar, a reworking of the former high altar, is placed on a limestone “rug” which is further defined by four new brass candle stands.

The project is a combination of restoration, preservation and new construction that relies on roots in the past as well as on the diversity of current experience. The result is a worship space for the 21 st century, firmly rooted in the history of its ancestors, yet poised to accommodate today’s assembly.

The project was exhibited at the 2004 National Convention of the American Institute of Architects in Chicago, and was published in the Spring 2004 Awards Issue of Faith & Form magazine.
